Terra Preta – Explaining its story

Welcome to the online course “Terra Preta – Explaining the story of Terra Preta, how you can make it and use it properly, and how it could help agriculture and the climate today.” This course is designed for vocational teachers in agriculture and environmental issues, providing in-depth knowledge about Terra Preta, its formation, benefits, and applications in modern agriculture and climate change mitigation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the historical significance and composition of Terra Preta soil. Participants will gain an understanding of Terra Preta’s origin, its unique characteristics, and its importance in indigenous cultures.
2. Understand the scientific principles behind Terra Preta formation and its benefits for soil fertility. This outcome will focus on the natural processes that create Terra Preta and the reasons for its superior soil fertility and structure.
3. Apply techniques for creating Terra Preta-like soils and producing biochar. Learners will be equipped with practical methods to replicate Terra Preta, including the production of biochar using (micro) gasifiers.
4. Recognize the agricultural advantages of Terra Preta and its impact on crop yields. This outcome emphasises the practical benefits of Terra Preta in agriculture, highlighting improved crop yields and plant health.
